Activities to Support Earth Science Understanding

sky-earth-space-working.jpgClass Room Tasks

  • Mountain Observations Look at photos of different mountain ranges (Andes, Himalaya, Rocky, Appalachian). ?
  • Weathering & Erosion Walking Field Trip
  • Photo Gallery
  • Landform 3-D Map
  • Show Us A…: individually or paired students act out to show landforms, forces that change the surface of the Earth, or dramatic weather events.
  • Word Carpet:  each student has a scrap of paper for each question. Focus on one landform or dramatic weather event (hurricane, mountain, canyon, etc.) What would you hear? See? Taste? Feel? Smell? Students write quick 2-3 word notes (clear & large) on a different scrap for each question. Paper scraps are laid out face up as a carpet of words and images about the setting.
  • Word Carpet Tour: in pairs, students stroll around the outskirts of the word carpet–one with eyes closed, the other guiding the other carefully while using the word carpet to tell their partner the story of the setting; then switch partners. Reflect together: what did they visualize or understand better after the “tour?”
  • Instant Poem: pairs choose five ideas from the word carpet, sequence them, find strong gestures, and a way of saying the words out loud to add to their meaning. Pairs share their poems with the group.

Virtual Resources

  • Mystery Science: Sign up for a free year of Mystery Science. Engaging science mysteries that each start with a question, include short video segments, and easy hands-on activities with accessible and inexpensive materials. Ohio Earth science standards can be addressed by using the 4th grade “Birth of Rocks” unit as well as the 2nd grade “Work of Water” unit. https://mysteryscience.com/rocks/rock-cycle-erosion-natural-hazards
