Virtual Field Trips

  • Have your students visit the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Some permanent exhibits are available to view as Virtual Reality, as are some past exhibits, including Fossils & Dinosaurs.
  • Check out National Geographic KidsAmazing Animals video series. Each brief video focuses on a specific species, sharing facts about their habitat and adaptations. They are visually striking and engage kids with fascinating facts and silly narration. Have students watch a few and then develop guidelines and generalizations for what’s included. Challenge them to make their own focusing upon your local wildlife species.

Apps

  • I LOVE this app–Litterati. You and your students can download the app and use it to photograph and geotag pieces of litter that you then either recycle or throw away. It is interactive, promotes good ecological awareness and global citizenship, and provides great data–you can search the map and check out the frequently updates statistics. There’s a great accompanying blog with lots of interesting articles, though do prescreen as they are written primarily for adults.
