Online Resources

  • iCivics is a cool site with many interactive games that allow student to pretend to work in each branch of government, be a responsible voter, or work in a law firm dedicated to upholding the Bill of Rights, to name a few. These games are more complex and interesting than I thought they’d be and help critical thinking and decision making. There are also unit plans for teachers in all different areas of Civics education that are aligned with state standards.
  • Newsdepth is a weekly news program specifically designed for intermediate students in the state of Ohio. The high quality and thoughtful news show covers international, national, and local news. It teaches vocabulary and high level concepts in high interest ways without talking down to students. This ~30 minute show is absolutely worth watching and discussing together and will cover lots of social studies and science topics in thoughtful, contextual ways.
